Create Fireworks with an Uptown Manor Theme

While we’re all awaiting the next season of events from Downton, why not host a Masterpiece of a manor party yourself? With the right background materials and props you can set the stage for an entertaining wedding, formal dance or charity event this summer.

To start, let’s agree that for castle-like buildings our Flagstone pattern is where it’s at. In flagstone you have a choice of materials: poly vinyl, corrugated paper, flat paper, and gossamer. Let’s look at the relative merits of each:

  • Poly vinyl is economical, flame retardant, and tough stuff you can use outdoors. You’ll get terrific coverage on walls and you can hang light items on it.
  • Flat paper covers well, you can stick light items on it and you can paint on this paper if you are so inclined. Use it to wrap a homemade cardboard fireplace (in this case, use a marble pattern and/or plain buff or gray).
  • Corrugated paper looks terrific on walls and will not sag. What’s more, this is a paper you can build 3D decorations with, such as pedestals.
  • Gossamer is an economical choice and easy to hang because it is light. Although it is translucent, it will look fine over walls that are fairly neutral and in fact will give you a quite realistic look.

Don’t hesitate to use more than one “flagstone” material if it works for you. A poly or paper could go on the walls – all the better for holding a cutout suit of armor every so often – and you could switch to gossamer for hanging in front of the windows.

In front of the window coverings, place the castle view panels shown at the top of this post. The panels are a magnificent 7-plus-feet tall, and free standing so you won’t have to worry about how to hang them.
Best of all, the panels are a takeoff on our highly-rated castle photo backdrop. Personalize the backdrop as a greeting banner, and select the same design in edible party favors such as mint tins and candy bars for a luxuriously customized experience.

Meanwhile, against all that gray stone you’ll need a strong secondary color to contrast with the gray. A true red is the natural choice for warming up the space, and gives you as many options in props and accents as you could hope for. Drape red, translucent gossamer from the ceiling in a tented pattern to maximize the impact of an exquisite chandelier at the center. Tack down red aisle runners as a rolled-out red carpet for guests.

Inexpensive medieval cutouts – crests, flags, pennant banners – bring a trio of bright colors to the walls, including red for continuity.

Take particular care with your tables, especially if this is a dinner party. Cover them in white satin and pull out the silver or gold plate chargers. Finish with large, sparkling glass vases of red flowers and candle arrangements using our new twisted-stem glass pillar holders, which are available in three heights for many decorating possibilities.

It’s Cuba Night! Host a Havana Party

Shake out the winter blahs with a hot Havana party that’s full of tropical warmth and Cuba’s unique Caribbean flair.

Havana Party Settings
Consider a Havana theme for cigar parties, winter fundraisers and New Years’ celebrations. Lots of color and music with distinctively Cuban rhythms are key.

In warmer climates, apply your Havana theme for a party around the pool or at the marina with nautical party supplies and palm tree décor. Colder locales can shut out the snow and cold by bringing the party indoors and re-creating the Tropicana.

What About the Tropicana?
In the era of lavish hotels and casinos (1930s-1950s) the Tropicana was the center of the nightclub universe.

The Tropicana originally consisted of a casino, an indoor dining room and stage and an outdoor dining room and stage. It is the outdoor venue, set among the royal palms, beset with voluptuous, scantily clad showgirls, that is pictured when imagining Havana’s exotic nightlife.

The legendary Tropicana is still in Havana – minus the casino – and the outdoor stage is a lovely setting to re-create, even for indoor events.

Start with the Palm Horizon backdrop silhouette, with its amazing 8-foot by 32-foot dimensions, to suggest the outdoor venue, and the Havana Nightclub Bandstand, shown above right, as your showstopper piece.

Take your cue from the bandstand piece for your color palette. You’ll be able to find bright pinks, greens and yellows in solid color tableware, for example, that you can mix-and-match to your heart’s delight. Place these bright pieces against midnight blue or deep purple table covers and skirts, and tropical luau centerpieces.

Back a stage/DJ area with colorful metallic fringe curtains, and finish decorating with strategic placement of free-standing palm tree décor and theme mylar balloons in palm tree, parrot and flamingo shapes.

Havana Food & Drink
Cuban culture took the hamburger and transformed it into a frita. We recommend you find a recipe for fritas, such as this one from Three Guys in Miami, and grill them small as sliders in keeping with one of the popular trends in party food.

Along with your fritas, Cuba libres would put a fun, Caribbean twist on the burger-and-cola tradition. Build a Cuba libre in a tall glass with a squeeze or two of lime, a few ice cubes, 2 ounces of your favorite rum (we prefer a dark, molasses-y rum for this) and enough cola to finish filling the glass.

Remember Men in November with a Movember Fundraiser

Growing a mustache for the cause of men’s health is not for everyone, but a party near the end of November is! Check out these awesome ideas for hosting a Movember fundraising gala, AKA a “Mo party.”

Mo Themes
The mustache party theme is traditional, and Shindigz has fun mustache party decorations reminiscent of the corner barbershop and old-timey barbershop quartets.

Hosting a mustache party is not your only option, though. You could move “mustache adjacent,” for example, by putting together a pirate party that would be blast plus a terrific excuse for sporting excessive facial hair.

How about a collective tip of the hat to a famous mustachioed character? A theme tied to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot might mean hosting a murder mystery in a setting associated with Poirot’s adventures: the opera, an Egyptian tomb, or perhaps one of the sumptuous stops on the Orient Express, for example Paris or Munich. Browse International Party Supplies to find your preference.

Mo Invitations
First, set up a Facebook page for your Mo party event so you can include the URL on the invitations. That way, invitees can visit and “like” the page to receive news and updates about the event. Then select an invitation appropriate to your theme and include the URL on the bottom line of your custom text fields.

If you like, slip thin fake mustaches from our collection of mustache party wearable favors into invitation envelopes for the guests who cannot grow their own. Ask them to wear the mustaches to the party – but do supply extras at the door for those who forget.

Mo Fun in Fundraising
Of course, you will want to recognize the best of Movember fundraising at the gala. Honor the top achievers using royalty favors such as crowns and robes.

Why not host a mustache contest? Mo “bros” who are seeking Movember sponsorships usually grow their mustaches beginning the first of November and shave them off December 1. They (the mustaches) should be looking very good by the time of the party!

Make up your own categories such as “Most Villainous” or “Most Firefighter-Like” and be sure to publicize the contest beforehand using the event Facebook page. Award swag bags to the winners.

Generally we like theme photo favors for a Movember party because guests so much enjoy having photos taken with mustaches fake or otherwise. Send photos via email to attendees, and be sure to publish an album of the best at the Facebook event site, too.

Live Up a New York Theme Party in Your Own Big Apple

Take a hearty bite out of the Big Apple by making your next bash a New York City theme party.

NYC Themes Just Right
There are nearly as many city theme party ideas for the Big Apple as there are occasions. Pear Pair up a corporate mixer with a sophisticated Madison Avenue theme, a winter formal with romantic Central Park, or a New Year’s Eve with a Times Square experience. A graduation might recall fond remembrances of a visit to the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty, while a fundraiser event might provide a 1920s-style NYC jazz club scene.

Once you’ve decided – or to help you decide! – take a preliminary trip to City Theme Party Props to take a peek at our inventory.

Did You Peek at the Props?
That’s fine! City theme props, kits and decorations are gorgeous, and there’s such a collection you’ll need to consider the party space and how many skyscrapers it can hold. Once you’ve determined your space needs and accommodations, select your buildings and monuments, newsstands and taxis.

Note that choice of props will also help you dress the party up or down.

Watch for the new props that come with activated sound chips that provide bites of traffic noise or saxophone jazz.

Making More Beautiful Decorating Music
Whether photorealistic or stylized, simple or busy, the backdrop must harmonize with the props. Recently introduced city party backgrounds, such as City Limits patterned flat paper rolls, can help you get the job done with a minimum of time and expense.

To re-create NYC’s nightly glow, backlight your props with red spotlighting and a plain background. Shindigz tends to favor a flat paper in Thunder Gray for this type of lighting effect, which you can see in catalog photos of some of the city prop kits such as Twilight in Central Park, shown above right.

Supply an abundance of twinkling city lights with street lamps, lots of string lights and lit centerpieces from city party tableware.

End on a High Note
An apple martini cocktail, AKA appletini, seems just right for some adult Big Apple themes. Here’s a recipe from The One Minute Bartender:

p.s. Personalized martini glasses make terrific city theme party favors!

Shindigz Party FUNd Helps 5 Year Old Give Back

When the Shindigz Party FUNd was created on the Shindigz Facebook page, it was a way for Shindigz to give to those who give back. The goal of this fund is to “fun it forward” by asking customers what they would do to make life more fun for someone else. And Shindigz is granting those wishes.

When little Sarah Mason began planning her 5th birthday party with her mom, Sallie, they decided to give back. Sallie states, “We are a US Marine Corps family with my husband, Major Kirk Spangenberg serving almost 15 years.  Each year, we teach our children that birthdays are about celebrating life, counting our blessings and using that time as a chance to bless others.  In the past we have chosen local non-profits, Ronald McDonald House, food pantries and crisis pregnancy centers to give donations in lieu of presents.  This year, we have chosen the Semper Fi Fund (www.semperfifund.org) as they serve a population close to our hearts.  Marines who are wounded face many challenges that are not covered by medical insurance.  Semper Fi Fund stands in the gap to make sure the Marine and his/her family are given every opportunity to heal, recover and re-enter society and live full and productive lives.  While our Marine has returned unharmed from his multiple tours, we feel a deep sense of obligation to help those who have not.”

In honor of her fifth birthday, Sarah Mason asked her friends not for Barbie Dolls, stuffed animals, games or toys, but rather that they bring $5 to donate to Semper Fi Fund to help other families.  Sallie posted her birthday idea on the Shindigz Party FUNd Facebook page and Shindigz granted a $250 gift certificate to buy thank you gifts and decorations for the party.
Sallie and Sarah decorated their local theater to the hilt with movie and popcorn decorations. They also received mini film tin canisters, favors for their guests and Movie Night Decopics for their adorable movie cupcakes!

According to Shep Moyle, Owner and Shindigz Party King, “We’ve spent a lot of time here around the old popcorn popper thinking about how our customers can help us make life more fun. This program is designed to bring a smile to someone who needs a bit more happiness, some laughs to folks who may be sad, and by making random acts of fun a part of everyday life. There’s no hook or catch. We aren’t selling products or marketing what we do in the world of party supplies. We want the world to know our ‘why’. The why we do what we do. Making life more fun.”

Shindigz is asking anyone with an idea for how to make life more fun for someone else to post their Party FUNd idea on their Facebook page. Shindigz has dedicated $25,000 to helping others make life more fun! Simply post your idea, ask for your friends’ support by voting on your idea, and Shindigz selects at least one idea per week that will come true.
