You’ve got one big advantage when planning a summer birthday party, compared to wintertime.
Warm summer weather which means you can include outside activities. With a little planning and perhaps reserving a spot at a local park, your birthday party options have multiplied.
Some birthday party themes practically beg for over-the-top decorations, activities and favors.
That’s how Dino Blast came to be. Dino Blast is the latest addition to animal birthday party themes and it is extreme, kind of like petting a velociraptor only without the risk of being devoured (except by children in the pretend sort of way).
This party collection is also designed to get you tagged “bestest mom ever” just by mixing up a Mesozoic stew as follows:
1. Grow a jungle. You’ll want to turn the place green generally, and then add strategically-placed 3D foliage.
First, choose a focal point. Most often that will be a wall or corner, in which case you’ll want to begin by placing a background of some sort on or against the walls. You have a delightful array of choices; here’s a sample:
A banner or photo illustration such as our forest backdrop. These come in three materials (photo paper, cardboard and vinyl) and a half-dozen sizes – and you can personalize them.
Tropical Foliage patterned flat paper and Sticky Tac.
Gossamer in a palm leaf or green mottled design. Sew a pocket along one long side and trade out your usual window treatment (a patio door would be perfect) or use a couple free-standing Showstopper curtain frames.
Continue building out from the wall. You can plant palm trees and scatter grass, and criss-cross the ceiling with streamers or cover it with light and dark green balloons. A few dinosaur footprint decals would be a nice touch here, too.
2. Populate the habitat. Though it depends on the age group, in general we love inflatable wildlife for this theme because they can be handled, and your choice in inflatable dinos has never been better.
We like big for dinosaurs! Brachiosaurus is 45 inches long and more than 2 feet high, and one party planner commented on the pteranodon: “The wingspan in amazing.” (It’s 65 inches.)
Another way to stop them in their tracks is to make a home for one of our new land-going giants, the 10-foot-long triceratops or the towering T-Rex you see here. Just imagine the looks on their faces, and what imaginative play it might inspire.

3. Feed the animals. After the kids are a tad tired out from relay races and chasing games, it’s time for some dino chow.
You’ll want to have a “wowza” table so they’ll be eager to leave the other activities behind. In the photo above you see we’ve done this not only with an attractive display overall but also with the prospect of exploring a tabletop sandbox an archeological dig.

Iron Man 3 is a Huge Hit
The Hollywood summer movie season is off to a huge start at the box office in May with a variety of sequels and retelling of classics. It’s been nearly 40 years since the previous telling of The Great Gatsby, so this isn’t really a sequel. Fast and Furious 6, and The Hangover 3 will be attempting to pull their fans back to the theater. Trekies are also a loyal group who are waiting for the next installment of Star Trek. The latest Star Trek film, Into The Darkness debuts at the end of May.
But the leader is Iron Man 3 which has captured the box office title two weeks in a row. The appeal of Iron Man 3 spans generations from younger children and their parents to older generations since Iron Man first appeared in comic books 50 years ago.
We just celebrated Senior Night with the Canterbury basketball team this past Tuesday. My son Chase is only a junior, but time seems to be flying by – next year it will be his big night! Each year we honor our seniors prior to the start of the last home game. The players and their families are individually announced and acknowledged as they walk through a giant balloon arch. This year we had four senior players and one senior manager. We created personalized standees and banners of each senior. We ended up winning 58 to 49, not a huge margin, but a win’s a win – on to tournament play next week. Canterbury teams love it when there is a “Moyle” on the team – more stuff. Good luck, Cavs!
The balloon arch was created with blue and white latex 11” balloons, a roll of white curling ribbon, six balloon weights, a helium tank (provided and stored at the school) and three sets of hands. The entire arch took about 30 minutes to complete. Once the assembly line was established, we were flying. We tied one end of the curling ribbon to the balloon weight and kept the remainder of the ribbon on the roll. We couldn’t decide how big we wanted the arch. One parent inflated the balloons, I tied the knot in the balloon (years of practice) and the third parent created an open knot/loop in the curling ribbon. We pulled the knotted end of the balloon through the loop, pulled it tight and moved on to the next balloon. We alternated blue and white, but any pattern could easily be established. Because we were moving so quickly, we made a huge arch and had to add extra weights to each end.

The banners took a bit longer to prepare since we needed to collect a number of images per player to make a collage. The printing was the fast part by Shindigz.
